Green Roof – DIY. Still a brown roof of course, but I will upload progress video this fall as our carport roof spouts out in grass and flowers. Experiment in green roofs with straw bales, compost, sand, gravel, wood chips, and Kentucky clay earth. Its like a big straw mattress on sheet plastic edged in Aluminum house wrap, The straw is a cushion and drain layer that will decompose but that will take some time. Two layers of black 6 mill plastic over bubble wrap makes the plant bed. The clay and gravel will supply water retention. Sand, gravel and wood chips give drainage. Nature will add leaves and seeds of all kinds. This project was plenty of work but we have a cool dry place to park our cars and the whole house facing west is cooler. Green roofs are worth the effort – we feel the difference already this summer.
