Thanks for the video, but you combined 3-4 bags at a cost of $44. Shouldn't you divide it by 3 to get a 'true cost'? Either ways, I think I am going with Mel's. Thank you.

John, how about doing some more new videos on what are the best top 5 of the premade soils to buy, that have all the stuff already in the mix, I looked for Rock Dust at Lowes and Home Depot, could you tell us about the free Rock Dust that you mentioned in your video and how we can get it.

    Thanks

I am close to Orlando FL, and they compost everyones clippings(trees, bushes, grass) and you can pick it up for free. I go every year. The first year I rented a pick-up truck from Home Depo.

I live in the Vigin islands and we have to pay much more for anything you show and most of it is available here . but what is ridiculously expensive. I founf compost fron Ace hardware at 3.99 for 3/4 a cubic foot as the best buy possible. Peat moss is 27.00 for 3.8 cubic foot and Pro Mix is 44 -45 a bag.

First year for doing Square foot.I made 7 4×4 with the sides being 15 1/2 inches.I have chickens and when I clean out the coop i put in in a big pile(Straw and poop.Could I fill the bottom with it then the dirt?

I bought 'Garden soil' at Lowes to build a raised veggie garden and found that its not soil but shredded tree bark and others, the PH was 8, how can they call that garden soil?
    I'm talking about OMNI

The math here doesn't add up. A four foot by four foot by six inches works out to 8 cubic feet. 4 feet *4 feet * 1/2 foot = 8. (six inches is the height recommended in the square foot system)
So, if there is three cubic feet per bag it should take 2.67 bags per four by four area not four bags.
Either these bags only have two cubic feet or there is a misprint on the calculation part of the bag.

Just read your posting about SFG soil. I have used SFG for a few decades going back before he recommended raised bedding. I converted to the new book's ideas and did it the way he suggested. I get great results. What I have discovered is that there is a free source of compost every year if you plan for it. Our local golf courses vacuum up all of their Autumn leave to keep the course playable. They then have to dump them somewhere. I asked the superintendent where they dump them. He told me and told me to help myself. When I went there, I discovered not only this year's leaves, but many years' leaves in different stages of decomposition. I just brought some bins I had laying around back over and loaded them up for some free rich compost, full of worms. Can't beat that.

We used Kellogs organic soil to start our community garden and we had a ton of mushrooms. We may have over watered a tiny bit, but we has a lot of mushrooms. No biggie, just worth mentioning. Our garden overall is in great shape since we followed your advice and added rock dust and other amendments.

Ok……….. i'm royally screwed.  Without researching I filled all my potting containers and large containers with bagged garden soil. How do I fix this? What can I buy to redo the soil.  I think I used kelloggs garden soil. What i'm scared about is my orange tree. Many of the branches on my orange tree died after this.. seems to be doing better now but i'm sure I need to fix the soil. Really scarry to take that tree out of the pot and redo it.

get one bag compost, one bag manure,1 thing of peat moss and a bunch of free dirt(enough to fill how many beds you making) and mix all that together then fill your beds. then start making your own compost, etc and amend over time. very cheap and works just fine
