Building a Raised Bed for gardening in contaminated soil, or schoolyards or cement or asphalt areas. Perfect for urban gardening and school gardening
This raised bed plan uses pressure treated lumber, but protects the clean garden soil from the treated lumber with a plastic membrane. Its supported by cement blocks that allow drainage.
I think this plan is great for school gardening programs. There’s no issue with soil contamination by using clean garden soil in the raised beds. If you do a soil test and find lead in your soil, build these.
School gardening with this easy raised bed design is a simple solution where they may not be much open space. You can build these and garden on an asphalt or cement playground.

was a great video…building one today and needed some tips…big ups…thanks Mr
That is what I was looking for a raised bed in the desert sand is all there is this will work thank you
dknj1640@aol.com
I'm a disabled Veteran so the raised garden is ideal for me. Thanks
Wow that's neat… But how does the drainage work…
Almost looks like a mini graveyard.
How does this drain? Building one this Spring. How would you recommend to drain, how many holes and what size?
Very interesting and helpful video!
Is that plywood sides as well and did they add more 2x4s on top as the top of the box rim looks wide like a 2×4. How high is it ?
Hmmm… Why would you want to a "raised bed" if you are over cement? Seems to me this would be most effective over an area that was previously populated with lush grass that you're afraid will pop through your weed liner… Yes, no?
good point there about arsenic. people have different opinions about copper, but it is a less toxic preservative. thanks!
They no longer use arsenic in treating wood. They use copper which does not hurt the soil, the food or the body. It is against the law to use arsenic as of this year in any treating of wood.
do you think you could use pegboard for the bottom for drainage, provided you have more support blocks? ( I don't think pegboard would be that strong? )
That is a very cool idea, something that could be a great project for many schools.
could use roofing material to line the boxes. I would use something like firestone epdm which is basically rolls of rubber that come in 10' wide by 20 to 100 feet long. This material can also be used in water features if you plan on making a small box and have extra material. could also make a hydroponic ebb and flow table with a timer and a very low pitch to the box so that the water will drain back into the containment tank.
Nice beds! I've been wondering about building similar ones on pallets so they can be moved and stacked into storage or out of the way for other events. My wife and I have been trying to come up with a (low cost) program that would allow her to do an outdoor farming/gardening unit with her second graders, but the school has very little room to dedicate to planting and no budget. Thanks for the ideas. Hadn't even thought of contaminants leaching from the wood.
thanks russ! eric.
Cool video!
i love all your video.
I had NO CLUE you are in Vegas!
Thank you John and Jake for this video, ,i have to say i start my organic garden because i wash John Chanel,i love it but on the way i feel he became a commercial person and i stop to see hes videos. But i like this video.thank you for sheering..!!
Awesome video, these guys are for sure my favorite garden gurus. It is cool seeing you guys working together!
I'm looking to buy "Perennial Tree Collard Greens" and need to know where I can buy them in the Las Vegas valley. I've grown regular collard greens and done well but I just don't have the room to grow enough to have a large harvest.
It's so awesome that you got to make a video with John C! I've watched so many of his videos and that's how I found your channel! Which is awesome because I am in Arizona also!
Thanks alot for the video, exactly what I was looking for and cant wait to build one. Start with AQUAPONICS X10
And John is still wearing that stupid pendant that doesn't do a darn thing. But the video is interesting since I live in Southern Nevada.

Hey guys… do you have Ylang Ylang plants available?
parsley grows amazingly well in those climates, and its a superfood
Thanks to you both….. always love hearing there's another vegan / raw foodist in the world.. . .
27:20 watering with cold water in hot temperature, I feel like an idiot for not trying that. fuck. Also was unsure whether or not to water so soon after the last watering in the heat. Much less 4 times in a single day as John mentioned. Good ideas, nigga.
Good plant choices…may be passing this vid along to my California friends. I have quite a few associates who are revamping their lawns/gardens to accommodate the drought.
I liked the video, especially at the beginning when you reveal the secret – how John & Jake make woodchips. ;)
Such a great and informative vid, from two of my fav guru's. I especially like the info about seeds acclimating to the environment the mother plant lives in. Now I will definitely save my seeds, which I was not doing before. This explains why volunteers the next season do so well! Can't wait to try it. Thanks Jake. : )
Great video: Entertaining, Educational, Humorous, Real… Two thumbs up all around!
Two of my favorite gardening guys together!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for helping us newbies. I am totally inspired by both of you! Jake, I hope to some day get some seeds from you. :)
For the Swiss chard, I really want to try the stalk, but I can't have salt. Do you know if there is any in it?
