I moved to Alabama, and before I packed up the DIY Vertical Grow Tower, I shot this video. Since shooting this video, I rebuilt the wood structure (reinforced it) to ready it for another season. I’m also working on expanding the system to multiple vertical grow towers, combined with other grow mediums and styles of growing in a single system.

I have an idea, what about making landscape fabric sleeves inside the 2 liter bottles, drill holes on the outside of the bottles for air pruning to prevent roots from clogging the bottle neck?  It would be a hybrid system, I thought about trying with a slow drip system myself.  I know it works with soil and watering from below, but with clay pellets and a drip system, I'm not sure.

There is always so much to learn and so many innovative ways to configure hydro systems.  Root systems seem to be an unexpected issue in a lot of setups.  I've had some with my 'official' dutch buckets that I never expected.  Looking forward to more!

the design looks VERY good. I think you are on to something, and The audio didn't bother me a bit, the video spoke for itself. Great job Wayne!

Wayne, it looked like the tower worked out well. Version 2.0 will be even better. Best wishes in Alabama!

Okay I think this is the last comment. I've actually found (through shear laziness) that its possible to just seed plants directly into expanded clay pellets. I've grown tomatoes, gherkins, basil, mint, chamomile, chives, and oregano from seed this way and it has worked very well. Just sprinkle seeds on and watch them grow! For plants that you only want one plant per planter like tomatoes just plant 3-4 directly on the expanded clay and then pull out all but the healthiest one out after they start growing.

ROOTS! They are constant maintenance whenever they can get into any sort of tubing or hole. I have a system (see my videos) and I have the same problem. I just have to constantly clear them out of my system.

I've had awesome results using Rockwool and Grodan (similar to Rockwool) for germinating seeds. Have you ever tried the water crystals for retaining moisture in any of your systems? It's a type of polymer that's odorless and absorbs almost 400 times their weight in water. I've used them in some of my containers that have a soil mixture and it made a big difference. As long as they couldn't get in the pump they probably would work good in hydro systems too. I did some experimenting this summer with just flowers and some basil just to see how well it worked. I'll try vegetables next spring now that I know how well it works.
